MICRO - Laboratory decontamination unit

The affordable, high-capacity step up for growing labs that need more throughput without more complexity

This compact and pre-engineered unit meets the needs of contractors and architects regarding price and footprint. It specifically serves high containment classes like Virology Labs, Research Labs, and CDC while meeting the requirements of researchers and biosafety workers.

  • Capacity: Up to 80 gal/day (300 l/day)
  • Technology: Batch
  • Energy: 100% electric
  • Effluent BSL: BSL1, BSL2, BSL3

Any kind of effluent coming from sinks, showers, washers, process utilities or from all the biocontained areas of your facilities will be decontaminated (integrated option for animal labs)

When your lab outgrows the basics

Research programs scale up and daily effluent volumes increase. This growth creates an impossible gap between benchtop units and full industrial systems. The MICRO by Actini was built specifically for that inflection point.

The MICRO delivers three times the treatment capacity of entry-level units. It serves university laboratories, research centers, and growing biotech facilities where throughput demands have increased but budget and space constraints remain. No dedicated utility room, complex commissioning process, or ongoing maintenance burden exists. You gain a significant step up in decontamination capacity from the moment you connect it.

Built tight, built smart

Space efficiency is a core design principle in the MICRO, not an afterthought. We have arranged every component to minimize the unit’s physical footprint without compromising accessibility or performance. The result is a system that fits into lab basements, utility corridors, and tight service areas where larger equipment simply cannot go.

What makes the MICRO genuinely different is its integrated energy recovery section. By pre-heating incoming effluent using heat captured from the cooling phase, the system reduces electricity consumption by up to 75% compared to units without energy recovery, cutting both operating costs and environmental impact without any change to treatment performance or cycle time.

Fully automatic, from collection to discharge

Once installed, the MICRO requires no manual intervention at any stage of the decontamination process. The onboard PLC takes over once effluent reaches the trigger level in the collecting tank. It initiates the cycle, manages the thermal sequence, monitors temperatures, and controls the discharge of cooled, decontaminated effluent. Every step is sequenced, verified, and recorded automatically, with no operator input required at any point.

This level of automation is not just a convenience, it is a biosafety advantage. By removing manual touchpoints from the decontamination workflow, the MICRO eliminates the risk of human error, reduces operator exposure to biohazardous materials, and ensures that every cycle runs to the exact same validated parameters, every single time. Whether your team is running a routine research protocol or operating under tight regulatory scrutiny, the outcome is always the same: a fully documented, reproducible, and compliant decontamination cycle.

Key Highlights

plug-and-play

Plug & play, zero hassle

No dedicated room, no fixed plumbing, no complex installation. Just connect it and you're up and running from day one.

ISO - environment

Energy recovery

The integrated heat exchanger recovers thermal energy from the cooling phase to pre-heat incoming effluent, cutting electricity consumption by up to 75% and eliminating the need for chilled water entirely.

Footprint

Engineered for tight spaces

Specifically designed to fit where other systems cannot, the MICRO installs in basements, corridors, and constrained utility areas without requiring structural modifications.

Technology

Zero manual intervention

The PLC monitors and controls every phase of every cycle automatically, from collection through treatment to discharge, with no operator involvement required.

Energie electricité

Continuous operation

The upstream collecting tank allows effluent to accumulate during active treatment cycles, so lab operations are never interrupted while the unit is running.

Checklist

Stock available, tested before shipment

Standardized manufacturing and pre-shipment testing mean the MICRO arrives ready to perform, with no on-site commissioning delays.

Decontamination cycle

  • Heat treatment with F050 depending on the required safety levels
  • Standard set 275°F (135°C) – 2 minutes
  • 66 gallons (250 liters) effluent storage tank
    Option: 106 gallons (400 liters)
  • Automatic start of treatment cycles according to the level of effluent
  • Guaranteed effluent decontamination with validation of the treatment efficiency by sensors and temperature control in several points including the coldest point
  • Ensured containment of contaminated effluent with sharpened safety devices
  • Continuous operation thanks to the collecting tank located before the kill tank so as not to have to stop the use of the unit during the treatment cycle

Design

  • Patented all-electric plug-and-play unit
    Single-phase 110 V – 50-60 Hz – 3 kW / 32 A
  • Mass produced and available from stock
  • Components: storage tank with safety valve and vent filter, batch decontamination tank and heat exchanger with energy recovery section
  • Micro Tank model 66 gal / 250 liters  35’’ x 43’’ (880 x 1,100 mm) – Height : 82’’ (2,100 mm)
    Micro Tank model 106 gal / 400 liters : 35’’ x 43’’ (880 x 1,100 mm) – Height : 88’’ (2,240 mm)
  • Energy recovery section to cool effluent at the outlet without additional refrigerant and save energy, cost and time
  • Cooling located after the decontamination tank which saves energy since there is no need to heat and then cool the decontamination tank
  • Fully automatic operation: monitoring desk and automatic recording of cycles by PLC (self-diagnosis programs included)
  • Gravity drainage
  • Sealed unit: the buffer tank and treatment section is inside the system
  • Leak detection system: alarms and optional visual control with transparent viewing panels
  • Automatic stop of the effluent discharge in case of an energy failure

Available Options

Performance & Safety

Retention tank with level sensor connected to an alarm For facilities where containment security is a top priority, this option adds a dedicated retention tank equipped with a level sensor wired to an alarm system. In the event of an unexpected effluent accumulation, the alarm triggers immediately, giving your safety team the response window needed to intervene before any risk of overflow or uncontrolled discharge occurs.

Lift system When drainage constraints prevent standard gravity-fed effluent evacuation, the lift system raises the effluent to the required discharge height, ensuring reliable and uninterrupted transfer regardless of your facility’s floor configuration or drain positioning.

Extra storage capacity – 106 gallons (W: 35″ – L: 43″ – H: 88″) For labs generating higher daily effluent volumes, the extended storage option increases the collection capacity of the MICRO without expanding its footprint. The unit grows with your throughput, not your floor space.

Maintenance & Traceability

Complete CIP (Cleaning in Place) Maintaining the internal integrity of a high-throughput decontamination system requires more than cycle validation alone. The Complete CIP option automates the full cleaning sequence of the entire MICRO system, including the collecting tank, with no manual disassembly or operator intervention required. Cleaning cycles run automatically, keeping the unit in peak operating condition while reducing maintenance time and minimizing exposure to contaminated surfaces.
